Why does our skin sag as we get older?

As we age our skin starts to lose its spring and begins to sag. There are a number of different causes, but one of the biggest and most preventable causes is sun exposure. Sun damage contributes to skin losing its elasticity and accelerates the break down of collagen and elastin, which leads to saggy skin and wrinkles.

As the epidermis starts to thin and loses the layer of fat that keeps your skin looking youthful and plump, it begins to sag and look more aged, wrinkled and fragile. The face has 9 fat compartments, which are gradually lost with ageing.

When the skin becomes less elastic, gravity makes eyebrows and eyelids droop, creates jowls and a double chin, and lengthens ear lobes. Volume is what differentiates young faces from old faces.

Significant changes occur in facial bones as we age which contribute to an ageing appearance. Areas that are particularly affected include the brow bones, cheek bones, and the jaw bones. The foramina (openings in the bones), widen as bone recedes, this reduces the scaffolding on which skin is draped, and a loss of support for the skin causes it to sag. Consequently, older faces reflect less light and have more shadows, also contributing to the ageing appearance.

Your sebaceous glands produce less oil as you age, making your skin drier and more prone to wrinkles and sagging. Lifestyle factors like weight loss, smoking and gravity all contribute to sagging skin.
