Winter is officially over and summer is well on it’s way! Whilst you may be a little too keen to get some colour into your pale, winter skin, it’s important to take the right precautions so your future self will thank you.

Within the skins epidermal (outer) layer cells contain the pigment melanin. Melanin protects skin from the suns ultraviolet rays, which can burn the skin, and over time, could reduce its elasticity and cause a person to age prematurely. Sun tanning occurs because of the exposure to sunlight causing the skin to produce more melanin and to darken. The tan fades as these cells move towards the surface and eventually flake off causing more new cells to come up towards the outer layer (cell turnover). UV rays penetrate the outer skin layers and pass into the deeper layers, where they can damage or even kill skin cells.

All year round it’s important to include a sunscreen or moisturiser with SPF, into your daily skin care routine. Even if it’s a rainy, overcast day, your skin could still be getting damaged from UV rays. My favourite is the True Solutions All Day Moisture SPF 30+ Untinted.

During winter and even summer our skin can become a lot lighter without sun tanning weather. This it isn’t a time to stress, in fact you should be pleased your skin isn’t getting damaged by the sun! We all love to have a glowing tan, it defines and makes our bodies look a lot more toned and healthy, but you don’t need to spend hours baking yourself in the sun to achieve it! Spray tans are the healthy sun-free tanning alternative. Here at Skindeep, we use SunFX tans which are 100% chemical free, all natural, contain no alcohols, artificial preservatives, parabans, perfumes or odours – and will leave you with a beautiful, natural looking tan.
